The Director General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mr Farouk Salim, on Tuesday said that the organization was on top of the game in winning the war against fake and substandard products in the country.
The DG told newsmen during a capacity building workshop in Lagos that the organization has recorded increased seizures of both fake and substandard goods.
He disclosed that the organization has been receiving feedbacks from market associations and stakeholders in different sectors which showed major improvement in quality of products.
He particularly pointed out significant improvement in steel and cable products, among others, adding that contractors handling projects have even testified to this development.
Salim while reacting to the quality of goods purchased online, advised consumers to contact the agency each time they have such issues.
He however said the organization was monitoring such sales, but admitted this could be difficult.
He said, “We have offices all over the country, you can bring these goods and the receipts to us to clarify these issues so that we can go back to these online dealers to seek redress".
According to him, the capacity building workshop was mainly to discuss issues affecting the media and SON. He added that his organization was determined to strengthen the partnership and urged the media to assist in the fight against fake and substandard products.
The Director of Standards Development in the agency Mrs Chinyere Egwuonwu, disclosed that the Nigeria National Standardisation Strategy (NNSS) Plan identified 658 standardisation projects which would be executed before the end of 2023; as part of the efforts to diversify the economy, thebl director assured that NNSS would support Federal Governments' Economic Recovery Growth Plan and Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP).
